This 3D printed heart has been able to beat for half an hour

3d printed heart

3D printing, especially the technologies that have a lot to offer within the medical field, is growing by leaps and bounds, proof of what I say you have it in how, until a couple of years ago something like what I want to tell you today was literally unimaginable , a heart made by 3D printing, created by a team of researchers from the ETH Zurich University (Switzerland), which has been able to operate for a period of 30 to 40 minutes.

As for the heart that you can see on the screen, it should be noted that it is a model that, as you can guess, has the same size as a human heart and even similar weight, 390 grams. In order to be manufactured, as has been revealed by the team of researchers, a lost wax casting technique has been used.

This project from the ETH University of Zurich has been able to demonstrate that, by means of 3D printing, organs such as a fully functional artificial heart can be created.

In the words of Nicholas cohrs, doctoral student at ETH Zurich:

This was simply a feasibility test. Our goal was not to present a heart ready for implantation, but to think of a new direction for the development of artificial hearts.

As a final detail, note that this heart, like a completely real model, has a right and left ventricle separated by a chamber which serves as a muscle for the organ. Its operation is as simple as the fact that, when a chamber is inflated and deflated by pressurized air, it is capable of pumping fluid from the chambers. If you need more details, without a doubt the video that is right at the beginning of the expanded post can be of special help to understand all this.
