This is the first photo of the US submarine printed in 3D by the country's Navy

submarine

A few weeks ago, the United States Navy announced that several of its laboratories and research and development centers were working on the manufacture of a submarine hull. The idea was to demonstrate that this construction does not necessarily have to require a long and expensive process, hence new techniques such as the Print 3D.

Before continuing, tell you that in order to carry out this work, the collaboration and work of the Navy Disruptive Technology Laboratory of the United States as well as Oak Ridge National Laboratory. These entities have been responsible for the construction of a submarine whose design has been inspiring in a SEAL transport and supply vehicle.

Thanks to 3D printing, the United States Navy can build the hull of a submarine in a 90% cheaper way

As for the main novelties, as has been revealed, we find that construction making use of 3D printing has allowed to reduce costs considerably as well as construction times. Regarding the data offered, we talk about a 90% cheaper price while the submarine may be available in just days while, using traditional techniques, it takes between 3 and 5 months and costs between 600.000 and 800.000 dollars.

As for the technical details of the submarine, it should be noted that we are talking about a model of about 9,5 meters in length made entirely of a carbon fiber composite material. For the construction of this submarine, those responsible for the project decided to use the 3D printer known as Big Area Additive Manufacturing o BAAM built and developed by Oak Ridge National Laboratory, a machine built with plastic, carbon fiber, and even metal prototyping in mind.
