Colombia will use drones to eliminate antipersonnel mines

FARC Colombia mines

One of the great problems of the Colombian government in recent years, solved recently, has been the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, better known as FARC - . After reaching an agreement for the ceasefire, a very difficult task must be undertaken, such as the elimination of thousands of antipersonnel mines, explosive devices that today have already claimed the lives of more than 11.000 victims in the last 25 years.

To carry out this work, the Colombian government has launched the project baptized as Drominating, a system created by engineers, surveyors, industrial designers and data analysts from the country itself that seeks to destroy literally all kinds of antipersonnel mines and find unexploded ammunition.

Drominando, a project launched in Colombia that seeks to eliminate all the mines placed by the FARC

Regarding the drones chosen to find these mines, Colombia has decided to use a model of its own creation equipped with hyperspectral cameras capable of finding strange artifacts on the ground. According to the creators of this project, we speak of a much more effective method than the use of conventional metal detectors since some explosive devices have been made of plastic.

On an economic level, the truth is that the project is quite expensive since, for example, the aforementioned camera has a price of $ 400.000 while the rest of the necessary parts add another $ 25.000. According Juan Carlos Tovar placeholder image, one of the creators of the Drominando project in Colombia, in order to create two functional prototypes of these mine detectors, they will need at least an economic investment of U.S. dollar 650.000.
