Create a new technology to manufacture flexible objects by 3D printing

flexible printed objects

As published since Disney Research, a department encompassed within the Multimodal Simultion Lab, apparently it has been possible to develop a new 3D printing technology with which any user could create flexible or deformable objects without further complication, they would only have to design their shape and send it to print to a special 3D printer model, to call it a some way.

What has really been achieved with this new technology with which we can create flexible objects is that it is in charge, in a fully automated way, of creating and calculating the mesh of a deformable object so that, when it is inserted into a 3D printer, it is manufactured in a fully automated way, thus creating an object with the behavior desired by the user.

Based on the statements made by Michelangelo Otaduy, a member of the Rey Juan Carlos University and one of the Disney Research researchers:

Several 3D models of the same object are taken as inputs, for example, a toy dinosaur with the tail bent to one side, with the head raised, looking to the side ... So that the system is able to create that dinosaur with capacity. to perform all these actions.

As results obtained in this research, it should be noted that it has been possible to demonstrate the ability to manufacture certain objects with heterogeneous mechanical properties that can be adapted to the desired deformations. As a detail, tell you that, at least for the moment and as announced by those in charge of the project, we are facing a theoretical solution that it has only been demonstrated on small toy objects.
