One of the great European projects that has been working on for a long time is what is known as Underwater Robotics Ready for Oil Spill, a project that is being carried out in the Polytechnic University of Cartagena, located in the city of Cartagena, province of Murcia, through which it seeks to develop a complete system for detecting oil spills on the high seas.
One of the key themes of this project is the development of a system that must be both complete in its current form and autonomous, that is, it has all the necessary means to detect spills and, in addition, this work can be carried out in offshore completely autonomously and without this system needing any type of human intervention for your control or guidance.
Drones of different types can already be used to detect underwater oil spills at sea.
To solve this problem, at the University of Cartagena they have created a solution where nothing less than six underwater vehicles, two aerial and one surface. All these individual components form a fleet that today is already capable of detecting underwater oil spills in, for the moment, the waters of Cartagena, where it is being tested.
As a detail, tell you that the base of operations of the last test carried out was nothing less than the Maritime Rescue ship 'Clara Campoamor', being listed as nothing less than the largest exercise carried out in Spain for non-military purposes.
