Dtto, one of the first modular robots with Hardware Libre

In recent months, hackathons or “Maker fairs” have become more common, events where many development projects are developed. Hardware Libre. One of these and most striking projects has been a robot named Dtto.

If it has attracted attention, it is because Dtto itself has the same operation as the little robot that appears in the movie Big Hero. This robot is modular, it is composed of several independent parts that can be put together to create a more complete robot, like a snake.

Dtto has a printed casing and inside it is composed of a plate Arduino UNO, nRF2401 transceiver, two SG92R Tower Pro Servos for articulating and three Pro SG90 Micro Tower docking servos. All this allows each of the parts can be joined and function as a single robot although they can also work independently.

The Dtto project is totally free and we can find it on Github where is the software and other information necessary for its construction, also we can find it in Hackaday, a website where in addition to having detailed information, it also has videos and photos with the possible ways that Dtto.

The entire robot is created with Hardware Libre but the truth is that it is not an economical construction because each part of Dtto needs at least one plate Arduino UNO. But since all their designs are free, we can modify the design and make it more economical with the same benefits or so it seems. The truth is at the moment there is no economic version of Dtto.

Dtto is really interesting because of its similarity with other modular robots but it is also true that so far can do few things or rather, it cannot be applied to everyday life.
