Finally, 3D skin bioprinting seems to have just received a great accolade in Spain, or at least these same is what has just been confirmed Joan Pere Barrett, head of the Plastic Surgery and Burns Service of the Hospital del Vall d'Hebron (Barcelona) and recently appointed as president of the European Burns Association, which includes specialists who treat people who suffer burn injuries.

Based on the latest statements made by Joan Pere Barret, it seems that the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products is expected to finally allow the latest 2017D bioprinting techniques developed in Spain to be applied at the end of this year 3. manufacture of synthetic human skin.

The Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products will allow the manufacture of synthetic human skin from the end of 2017

Going into a little more detail, as has been revealed during the celebration of the 17th Congress of the European Burns Association, apparently this treatment is carried out using bioprinters loaded with cell cartridges that, by means of a very specific software, they are able to create better quality artificial skin than the cultivated skin that is precisely what is being used today in the treatment of burns.

In his own words Joan Pere Barrett:

Bioprinting makes it a very fast process. Now we have to wait weeks to grow skin, while with bioprinting we can go much faster and we can cover and heal people immediately, thus preventing infections and improving the chances of survival.

It's not 100% leather, but it already looks a lot like it. Now the preclinical results, while we wait for the clinical ones, look a lot like human skin. They still do not have capillaries, or hairs, or melanin, or pigments; but we are getting closer and we believe that in the next decade we will be able to print capillaries
