Gilbert300, a hexapod robot that prints

Gilbert300

The world of robotics is without a doubt one of those that has benefited the most from the Hardware Libre, so much so that the use of robotics starter kits has made the demand for devices, parts, etc. even greater.

However, thanks to hardware libre many people create their own kit or even their own robots without having to use these kits. Something similar was done by Philippe Leca, a French engineer who has built Gilbert300, a hexapod robot, with an arduino board and a 3D printer. Gilbert300 is a robot whose parts are printed and whose designs are free and that works with Arduino.

The nickname "300" comes from the fact that it is the third version to be built. The first design was built from aluminum and had a PS2 cable attached to make it work. The second model already changed its frame for plastic pieces that were lighter but were pieces that came from other kits, something that is still irreproducible. And finally Gilbert300 arrived, the third version that has a design made in OpenSCAD, a free CAD design program, which was then printed on a 3D printer and after that, everything was connected to an Arduino board that also allowed Gilbert300 to communicate via wifi.

Gilbert300 can be printed and built without paying for a kit

The Gilbert300 spider robot is not only beautiful in appearance but it works correctly, so during the tests that have been carried out, Gilbert300 has shown that it can walk correctly on the ground. In addition, the latest additions mean that this spider robot can even take photographs of the area while it is walking and send everything to a computer remotely, without having to depend on any cable.

Personally, spider robots do not convince me, however I have to say that this design is curious, not only because of the materials used but also because of the fact that no kit is needed for its construction, only an arduino board, some motors and a 3D printer.
