How to fix Dirty Cow on Raspberry Pi

Dirty Cow

In the last few days an update of the Gnu / Linux kernel has come out that announced the end of a bug that endangered the administration of the system and the equipment in question. TO this bug has been named with "Dirty Cow", an almost historical bug that took advantage of the write-to-copy function that the kernel itself had.

Dirty Cow has been fixed and little by little it is being eradicated from the main Gnu / Linux distributions, but How do I fix it on my Raspberry Pi operating system?

The solution is very simple because being in the kernel, it will be enough to update the kernel to solve the bug, but not all distributions have the updated kernel. Some of the most famous distributions for Raspberry Pi still have no solution to this error although it is expected to be fixed quickly.

How do I fix Dirty Cow if I have ...

  • Ubuntu: In this case it is already solved and in a future update it will be automatically solved.
  • Debian or Raspbian: In this case we have to open the terminal and write the following:
sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install raspberrypi-kernel
  • Fedora or Pidora: This distribution will have a new version in a very short time, so we will have the problem solved quickly: updating the system.
  • Arch Linux: Arch Linux is a distribution rolling release so updating the system with Yaourt we will have the new kernel with the bug corrected.
  • Slackware: This distribution is not updated yet and the only function to not have Dirty Cow is compiling and installing the new kernel version from source code.

These are the main distributions that have a version for Raspberry Pi and that you will surely be using. And if you do not have these or you are not concerned about the matter, think that the problem can be very important if you use server functions or system administrator, as Dirty Cow allows anyone to take advantage of your system, so try to fix it!
