The UPM creates software so that any drone can detect a fire

UPM

Thanks to the work carried out for several months by a group of researchers from the Center for Research in Software Technologies and Multimedia Systems for the Sustainability of the Polytechnic University of Madrid, UPM, it has been possible to create a software through which a drone could be capable, in a completely autonomous way, of spot a forest fire. This is possible thanks to the fact that the software developed is capable of comparing the different shades, both of the flames and the smoke generated during combustion, with the rest of the environment.

One of the conditions for the creation of this computer program by the UPM group of researchers responsible for it has been the fact that It had to be used in a drone given the speed and reliability that this technology demonstrates today, especially when covering very large areas of land. As you can see, we are talking about a more than interesting tool, especially for surveillance work in large areas of land since it would help enormously both in the detection and in the prevention of fires.

A group of researchers from the UPM has created software capable of making any drone serve to detect a forest fire.

Why use drones for this new service? This question has an almost immediate answer since, as in other occasions and jobs, the use of drones is much more profitable than carrying out this same task using traditional means such as using helicopters and rescue planes. On the other hand, in case of need, the drone can reach much more complicated places, in terms of access, without any human being in the slightest danger.
