L'Oreal and Poietis will create hair using 3D bioprinting

L'Oreal bioprinting

So much L'Oreal as poietis, two French companies of considerable renown, one for dedicating itself to the world of cosmetics and the other for being a benchmark in the world of 3D bioprinting, have just announced a collaboration agreement that unites them in a project in which they will try to create hair through additive manufacturing. As a detail, tell you that Poietis is already developing biological tissues for research applications in regenerative medicine, so it is not a new field for them.

Among the technology they want to use and evolve, mention the laser-assisted bioprinting of biological tissues Initially developed by Poietis, it allows cells to be positioned with great precision and extremely high viability. Thanks to this, successive deposits of microdroplets of biological inks containing some cells can be printed, layer by layer, by means of rapid scanning of the laser beam. This living tissue must be matured for about three weeks before being suitable for testing.

L'Oreal and Poietis join forces to end all baldness problems.

It is hoped that thanks to this project it will not only be possible to help people with their baldness problems, but it will also serve to open the possibility of new studies such as the creation of cartilage and other types of viable cells. Unfortunately and according to estimates from L'Oreal, apparently and at least for about 3 years, the desired results will not be obtained although this time depends, for better or worse, on the effectiveness of the investigations and experiments.

Based on the statements of Jose Cotovio, Director of Model and Method Development at L'Oreal Research and Innovation:

For L'Oreal, the combination of the respective know-how can herald advances never before achieved in the hair field. This research collaboration is very exciting for the Advanced Research teams.

For the first time, laser-assisted bioprinting technology will allow us to place the cells responsible for the genesis of a hair follicle in the appropriate spatial distribution with a very high degree of precision. The ultimate test of our success will be whether we can achieve the production of both hair fiber and epidermis around the follicle.
