Spanish doctors design the first 3D splints to treat clubfoot

splints

Before starting with the news, tell you the problem that many people usually suffer from because of what is known as Equine foot, a problem that is usually suffered due to a congenital, neurological inheritance, polio sequelae, post-traumatic disease ... something that makes doctors have to do a deep biomechanical study to determine the origin of this pathology that unfortunately is much more common than what you can imagine.

As you can see in the images, there are many doing a simple Google search, for example, it is considered clubfoot at the feet with the ankle in the position of maintained plantar flexion This causes a fairly large restriction of the dorsiflexion of the ankle so that patients affected by this ailment cannot walk with the sole of the foot on the ground, a problem that must be remedied as soon as possible if we do not want it to worsen considerably.

One of the solutions, apart from the conservative treatments consisting of physical therapy, is the help for the correction of some type of orthopedic device. Until now, everything was basically splints of different types and shapes, although the most recommended, and until now expensive, was to carry out a treatment tailored to the patient after performing a correct gait study. This treatment can be quite cheaper thanks to the capture of a digital image and the processing of the corresponding splint by 3D printing.

Thanks to this technique, a predetermined splint can be designed in terms of thickness and rigidity that maintains the position of the patient's leg in the correct and effective position. The technique used for the printing of this splint is 3D SLS printing (Selective Laser Sintering) where several fibers can be mixed in the manufacturing process to achieve greater resistance and durability of the product.
