Navantia bets on 3D printing for shipbuilding

Navantia

Navantia is a Spanish public company specialized in shipbuilding for both civil and military use. This company was created in 2005 after the division of several of the military assets grouped within Grupo IZAR, also a public company. Once we meet Navantia, it is time to talk about the technology they use for shipbuilding where they have just announced the inclusion of different 3D printing techniques in your processes.

The idea that the company's managers have is to manage to evolve as much as possible its headquarters located in Puerto Real, Cadiz, to get to what they have called 'shipyard 4.0'. As has been communicated by the company itself, thanks to this new technology Navantia is one step closer to achieving this objective of a sustainable company in the naval, strategic and international industry, capable of develop competitive naval programs.

In its quest to be one of the most competitive naval companies in the sector, Navantia has decided to include new technologies such as 3D printing in its manufacturing processes.

As he commented Pablo Lopez, director of the Puerto Real shipyard:

We have developed a strategy called Shipyard 4.0, which is the application of enabling technologies from the fourth industrial revolution in which we are immersed, in our production processes.

Shipyard 4.0 has clear objectives to reduce costs, deadlines and increase the quality of our products and processes, to achieve the competitive sustainability of the company. When talking about Shipyard 4.0, the use of technologies such as robotics, the Internet of things, artificial intelligence, augmented reality, advanced simulation techniques, etc.

The ongoing projects and initiatives allow us to visualize the potential that this line of work has by itself and in the whole of Navantia's commitment to the Shipyard 4.0 model. It can be foreseen that this technology has come to stay and be part of our productive fabric in the near future
