PiNet, a mature option for computer classrooms

Official PiNet logo

We have known about the PiNet project for more than two years and during this time, the project has not only grown but also stabilized. PiNet is a more than ideal option for computer classrooms.

The project has gone from being a series of scripts to a full operating system for Raspberry Pi with software to be controlled by the computer classroom teacher or administrator.

PiNet was born as a series of scripts to be used in Raspbian to remotely control the Raspberry Pi. But now it is a program for Ubuntu Server which generates an image for the Raspberry Pi.

This new version creates a complete image that we can record on a sd card and then use on the raspberry computer. This software will connect the raspberry computer with the server and eThe system administrator will be the only one who can decide on the software or the functions that the client created by Raspberry Pi has.

In recent months, PiNet has been able to manage and administer computer rooms with more than 30 clients created with Raspberry Pi and a total of more than 600 users. All without any problem, which shows the maturity of the system. This new version, as well as all the documentation of the project to use it, can be found in the official website of the project.

The only problem that I notice with this new version of PiNet is the use of Ubuntu Server as the base operating system. And it is a problem for the simple reason that early versions of Raspberry Pi don't work very well with Ubuntu, so PiNet would not work well with these models. But, if we really want to have an economical and powerful computer classroom, PiNet is a good alternative, it may be the best that exists if we want to use free technologies or look for something beyond Windows.
