Stratasys, a leading company in the 3D printing sector, has been working together with the company Aurora flight sciences to be able to create what today they themselves have baptized as the Largest, fastest and most complex 3D printed drone ever made. As a detail, tell you that the ship that you see just above these lines has been manufactured using FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling), an exclusive material from Stratasys.

Regarding the characteristics of this drone, tell you that we are facing a model that has a size of 3 meters with a final weight of only 15 kilograms. Its entire structure, specifically 80% of the entire drone, has been created by 3D printing, something that may surprise many, especially when we talk about the fact that, thanks to its peculiar design, the drone is capable of reaching in flight one maximum speed of 241 km / h.

Stratasys and Aurora Flight Sciences join forces to create a printed drone capable of reaching 241 km / h.

Based on the statements made by Scott sevcik, Director of Aerospace Development and Vertical Solutions, Stratasys:

Manufacturing this vehicle involved using different 3D printing technologies and materials together in a single aircraft to maximize the benefits of additive manufacturing, both powerful and lightweight components.

In addition to leveraging FDM materials for long structural members, we utilize various production capabilities from Stratasys direct manufacturing services to produce components that are better suited to other technologies. We chose the nylon fuel tank over the laser synthesizer, and the exhaust pipe of the injection system was 3D printed on metal to be able to withstand the extreme heat at the engine nozzle.

For its part, Dan campbell, Aerospace Research Engineer for Aurora Flight Sciences, stated:

One of the main goals for the two companies is to demonstrate to the aerospace industry how quickly you can move from design to construction to flight of a 3D printed jet-powered aircraft.
