UNICEF and Malawi to launch a new drone program

UNICEF

The United Nations Fund, better known as UNICEF, just announced that they have reached an agreement with the current Government of Malawi to launch a new program where drones will be used in the country's humanitarian corridor. We speak neither more nor less than the first of its kind that starts in the country.

This broker has a very special purpose and it is to generate a controlled platform for universities, the private sector or other potential partners who want to join this initiation with which to deliver various types of services to the communities of Malawi. Its central point will be located at the Kasungu airfield, right in the center of the country, and will have a radius of action of about 40 kilometers.

Malawi, thanks to the collaboration with UNICEF, will open the first drone corridor in Africa

Based on the statements made by the Minister of Transport and Public Works of Malawi, Jappie mhango:

Malawi has proven in the past to be a leader in innovation and it is this openness to innovation that has led to the establishment of Africa's first 'drone' corridor.

We have used 'drones' in the past as part of our flood response and we can see the potential for other uses, such as transporting medical supplies, that could transform life in remote rural communities.

For its part, Christopher fabian, Senior Advisor to UNICEF's Office for Global Innovation, commented:

This corridor can significantly improve the efficiency and capacity to deliver services to the world's most vulnerable children.

The success of these trials will depend on working in new ways with the private sector, the government, and local entrepreneurs and engineers who can ensure that technologies provide appropriate solutions to the people who need them most.
