Utah equips its SWATs with 3D printers

SWAT

Before I even begin to go into detail with this news, I would like to stop for a moment to understand what exactly are SWAT in the United States. The SWAT or Special Wapons And Tactics come to be a special operations group that every police force has in the North American country, something that makes us understand very well what level its members usually have and that, the fact that they have been equipped with 3D printers can change the way you proceed.

As you will surely understand, we are talking about personnel who have been specially trained to carry out high-risk operations such as the fight against terrorists, hostage rescue, explosives deactivation ... Now, in addition, they are receiving 3D printing training to improve their tactics thanks to the enormous possibilities offered by this technology.

Thanks to problems encountered during routine practices, the SWAT team in Utah will be equipped with several 3D printers

In the words of Sergeant Harold 'Skip' Curtis, where he tells us that the idea of incorporating 3D printing came due to the problems they had during an internship:

We were having trouble gluing the electrical tape, and it was difficult to get the fiber cable to roll evenly the way we needed to get the load to work properly. I've been doing contract work with WMDTech… so I wanted to see if they could 3D print a clip that would attach the detonator wire quickly and safely in any weather.

Without 3D printing, the cost of creating the barbed cord clip and sharing it with other technicians and pump deactivators could have cost $ 10.000 for an injection mold.

With 3D printing, if you need to change the item, you simply change the drawing.
