A young Bolivian creates his own prosthesis by 3D printing

prosthesis

Leonard Viscara It has just been news since, at his young age, he has been able to develop and create a 3D printing prosthesis for himself since, when he was in his mother's womb, his own left hand was entangled in the placenta and not a malformation known as amniotic band syndrome could develop fully.

At 14 years of age, this young Bolivian has been able to create a functional prosthesis most interesting, a project that began with a very precarious hand, a kind of clamp that was hardly useful to grasp objects, but which has evolved into a much more complex project that did not quite convince him due to its adjustment . Investigating a little, he met a French boy and an American foundation that were dedicated to the manufacture of this type of prosthesis.

Leonardo Viscara has been able to fabricate a fully functional prosthesis for his own left hand.

Thanks precisely to these contacts, he was able to send him a robotic prosthesis that, although it was too big and did not serve him much, the truth is that it inspired him to develop his own. The first thing was to get the design, which he took from the internet, which led to the Sawers Robotics Institute, located in the city where you currently reside. Once there, with the help of a 3D printer, they managed to manufacture all the parts that made up the hand and manufacture it.

As a detail, tell you that Leonardo Viscara managed to manufacture his prosthesis by less than 100 dollars when the bionic prostheses marketed by different companies can cost more than $ 15.000. At the moment, this prosthesis, as he assures, is just a prototype that is still in evolution since, for his taste, he has not yet achieved the precision and strength that the young man would like.
