HPMicro HPM6800: New development board based on RISC-V

HPMicro HPM6800

The HPMicro HPM6800 family of boards include a high-end RISC-V microcontroller that reaches up to 600 MHz. All models feature 1064KB of SRAM, support for DDR2/DDR3/DDR3 external memory, NOR, PSRAM and eMMC flash, audio interfaces and a variety of peripherals with eight CAN FD interfaces, gigabit Ethernet, high-speed USB and many more .

This family is divided into three models:

  • HPM6830 without video support
  • HPM6850 with 2D graphics and video inputs/outputs
  • HPM6880 which adds support for VeriSilicon's OpenVG 2.5D GPU.

When HPMicro was first introduced in 2023 with the HPM64G0 1 GHz RISC-V microcontroller, the documentation was difficult to obtain, was only in Chinese, and no download links could be found for the development tools, i.e. something disastrous. for the community of makers who wanted to create their projects with this board. However, now everything has changed for the better, including an SDK under BSD license, Middleware and RTOS (also coming soon to RT-Thread and Zephyr), and documentation now available in English. And firmware development can be done in Segger Embedded Studio for RISC-V for free and HPMicro is said to provide their own HPM Studio IDE based on the VS Code framework, but no download links can be found.

The HPM6800EVK can be purchased at the company website, since it is only available in China. As for the price, it is approximately €200.
